___

It is long  time since Franco Silvestro has worked as a painter, sculptor, video-artist, installation artist, call him what you want or simply call him an artist, maybe one of those who  choose  the most diverse means of expression because he wants to testify the complexity of a reality on which he wants to intervene.Infact, wanting to  define, Silvestro is an artist of reality, as it was once “the painter of reality” i.e a painter interested in social issues. This isn’t definable political commitment, it is a desire to witness, not so much a context in which he works and lives, but more precisely himself as a subject, I would even say as  historical product. Silvestro lives in Naples, he has  also lived in Milan and elsewhere where his work of Art Academy teacher has led him and does not belong to a family of the rich bourgeois, in other words , his existential context is “popular” and being  Naples, I use this term in quotation marks. Because there is no need to read newspapers everyday to know that Naples is, not only the popular comedy by Eduardo and the Nativity of Saint Gregorio Armeno, but is also all the horror we are daily and precisely informed of:organized crime and all the degradation we know about to our disappointment; see the latest political-judicial events.Of course, we say Naples but we should say all over Italy and much of our world: that city, in the work of Silvestro is identifiable in its geopolitical and historical identity, but is also intended as a metaphor of an existential situation, of a state of body and soul. Not nice, say contradictory, besieged by evil , but full of potential.
I followed  Silvestro’s work particularly in the 90s when he was in Milan and displayed his works in the art gallery Artra Studio. Before that time and later I saw and see  his works in his studio in Naples (even before in Afragola), assiduously , but without much continuity. Those are the years I know better and are also those of a more precise “stance” on the part of the artist, the years that his maturity is founded on. He likes to say that his first work created in Milan was the 1992 installation at Viafarini: “Fog”(”Nebbia” ), it was called  and it was literally an environment which progressively filled with artificial fog engulfing everything and everyone, starting from the artists who besides Silvestro were: Piero Gatto, Gabriele di Matteo and Simeone Crispino di Vedovamazzei. A Neapolitan group of artists one would talk about shortly thereafter. The action then was “revived” by another internationally known artist for a pavilion of the Venice Biennale, you know how things go; Italian artists are not known abroad because nobody promotes them and their ideas are not spread.Probably that fog ,that made whoever saw the exhibition  lose space-time characteristics, that is to see nothing else ,was for artists a tabula rasa, nought, a radical act of nullification from which to begin again.Indeed,  almost all started again with their most interesting research. For Silvestro the fog was one of the many strategies of coming out from the centrality of painting he had started from, having made his debut in the times of prevailing Transavantguarde, and that he had already attempted  also with the collaboration of Piero Gatto(works of carton and the name of Gatto Silvestro, Sylvester the Cat that will remain memorable).
Some years after he accomplished  some of his works that remain in his curriculum as his most complete in the sense I said before, that is able to focus on a precise content and at the same time to generalize it, not to make it “universal”, but emblematic of a historical reality.
Silvestro resorts to what the term “popular” involves once referred to the complicated reality of Naples: his videos are sometimes recordings of musical programmes made by local televisions , in which someone sings songs as the one dedicated to the breast-fed babe that is to the camorra boss that is evidently hero-worshipped. And these videos are constructed in the simplest way, with a recording in real time , and presented in a similar modest way, through a monitor set on the floor in front of a gigantic poster of an ill-famed area of the city. Popular connects to, in short, to “lower” cultures that become oppositional as regards the official culture in such a way as to closely relate to the counter-values of organized crime. Silvestro’s attention  naturally goes to the victims, indeed it can be said that the social environment as background to his works is entirely impregnated  of their instance, emerging from his first works , from the portraits with paint and gunpowder….The victims are anonymous, even when they have a name, and anonymous is the force that crushes them, that has abstract names, such as Camorra or drugs, but behind which lurk beings of flesh and bones that never emerge to light, they hardly ever have an identity. In the installations the weight of this anonymity , recognizable, but not said is expressed with the clutter of things, the thousands of syringes that cover the floor of the” “the Room of Antonio who mainlined”( “La stanza di Antonio che si bucava”) ….a room where the only other presence  is the photo of a boy seen standing from behind, naked, his back riddled with bullets. Installation and video, with the use of non-art materials, photographs, or taken with a deliberately “dirty” shot, is the dry and tough side of Silvestro’s work. Curiously, however, the paintings that he has continued to realize in the course of his entire career, have taken over time an almost fairy-tale aspect, a lyricism turned towards a childlike imagery full of delicate colours. When it doesn’t come to bas-reliefs or very beautiful glazed ceramic busts. This, however, concerns the most recent period: in those years, his painting turns into grey and describes  desolate suburbs redeemed only on account of a strong and formal clean sweep and shows a synthetic capacity in describing urban views  leading later in “Marginal landscapes” (“Paesaggi Marginali”)in 2001, year that ends the period to which I refer here. Curvilinear strokes  of grey paint that were once streets and are now sliding planes fallen into decay, eddies where urban buildings collapse , dissolve  in a surge as surreal as disturbing. And if his painting drops us into a suspended dimension, if it displays scenarios that seem caught in a dramatically metaphysical aura, his three-dimensional work plays, at this time, a different role that brings us back to the toughest reality. Installation or sculpture thus become encumbrance : it is the weight of a reality that no aesthetic look will ever transcend, which the artist wants to testify in the most direct way, simply displaying , indeed accumulating materials, filling the space. There is also a soldier, a living stature in person that in camouflage is keeping watch on a pedestal, protected by a vault of bulletproof glass. And there are objects, matter of everyday life: the furniture of a flat arranged in an orderly way (and with a television on) in the exhibition hall for the exhibition entitled “the Eviction” (“Lo Sfratto”)and few residual elements of “The Stolen Car” (“La Macchina Rubata”) with the battery still active operating the windscreen wipers: all works of 1998. Works, objects, materials are deaf being drawn from a degraded reality, belonging to the depressing world of ordinary things, inexpensive, at the limit of bleakness. And yet they shout, clutter is always an excessive presence and they are made to annoy, to seem incongruous and impressive, inexplicable beyond their certificate of generic drama: what is a real soldier doing in a booth inside an art gallery?  Well, all the adjectives and nouns used in this last sentence are perfectly suited to describe it, as well as the reality, especially the one which Franco Silvestro wants to make allusion  to.
